Learning Support Services
Inclusive Education
All students, regardless of strengths or weaknesses, are part of the school community.
Active Learning
We empower our students to be actively involved in the process of their own learning.
Authentic Assessment
The purpose of assessment is to help students learn. Authentic tasks or real-world issues are provided as the context for learning activities. Other assessment tools that are used are: Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT), STAR Assessments, Oregon State Assessments, student portfolios, and self- and peer-evaluations.
Learning Styles
Classroom activities evolve around Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences and learning styles.
SAT Preparation
Sophomores and Juniors may take the PSAT’s each school year. Seniors who plan to enroll in a four-year college or university will complete an SAT Preparation Program prior to taking the SAT.
Career Planning
The Academy at Sisters prescribe to the “school to work” goals of making realistic career decisions and providing learning experiences that connect school and work.
Emotional Intelligence
The Academy at Sisters holds its students to high standards of character. Students’ academic achievement increases as we attend to their social and emotional development, which is provided through classroom instruction, supported school climate, and community service. According to Daniel Goleman, emotional intelligence is “a different way of being smart.”
Accelerated Reading
To assist our students to read more and improve their reading abilities, students may participate in the Accelerated Reading Program, which is an individualized, self-paced program that allows students to read books within their “zone of proximal development”, which is the level of difficulty of a book that is neither too hard nor too easy.
Accelerated Math
The Accelerated Math Program is a task-level, computer generated math curriculum that ensures success in Math for all students, regardless of their ability. Instruction is individualized for each student so that they may work at their own level; therefore, allowing the students to reach their own greatest potential.
