“Leadership is influence – nothing more, nothing less.” –John Maxwell.
Service Learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience and teach civic responsibility. Our Learning Center successfully includes service learning as part of its curriculum. Our purpose is to challenge students to create change within themselves and subsequently influence others in positive ways. Our focus is on active citizenship and community engagement as ways of applying their leadership skills. We strive to ensure our students are equipped with the skills and knowledge that extends beyond the classroom and prepares them to be leaders.
Oregon Natural Desert Association – Explore the High Desert
Oregon Natural Desert Association works to protect, defend and restore public lands and waterways in Oregon’s high desert for future generations.
Last summer, the Academy at Sisters partnered with the Oregon Natural Desert Association to bring some much-needed trail work to the Oregon Desert Trail in the Steens Mountain Wilderness.
The students learned about the long-distance route and the important conservation work ONDA is engaged in this year. They earned credit in both their photography and terrestrial ecosystems classes through the project.
In addition to developing a plant-guide for the Oregon Desert Trail, the group of students improved over a mile of trail for future hikers and horseback riders.
“If Mother Nature could hear me I would tell her I love her every day.
I’d write love letters to the trees, whisper her name in the wind.
Fold those love letters and place them in the ocean…
We need to spend time with her,
to understand the importance of her beauty.
so please make it your duty to save what we have left of her.”
~An Academy at Sisters student answering the question: “What is the importance of wilderness and spending time outside in nature to your life?”
